Air Travel

You can usually save a bundle over other airlines by flying Southwest Airlines into Baltimore and then taking Amtrak to New York. There is a FREE, short shuttle bus from the BWI airport to the Amtrak station located just outside the airport grounds. Read more information about the trains going to New York.

The best advice for selecting flights into New York is to shop around a lot. Vary the dates and times of your departures, whether you stay over Saturday night, the airline company, your routes, and combinations with a train or car. Be sure to buy your tickets a month or more in advance to get the lowest price. You should also check carriers out of Atlanta for good deals. I once saw $69 each way from Atlanta to Newark Airport (about 15 miles from New York City) on board one of the big carriers! You can't shake a stick at that.

SOUTHWEST AIRLINES SEATING

Southwest Airlines has an unusual seating policy. You are not assigned a seat. Instead, you are given a boarding pass with a number on it when you check-in at the gate counter. The plane is boarded in groups, with the lowest numbers boarding first. Check-in begins one hour before the plane departs so be sure to arrive at the gate before then. The upside of the seating policy is that you can sit where you want and the plane is almost always on-time or even early!
